Jacky Whites Car Park Refurbishment Sunderland

Jacky Whites Market in Sunderland has a rich history that dates to the early 20th century when it was established by James Whyte, known locally as “Jacky”, but the iconic name was bourne out of a signwriters
spelling error on his original cart, a typo that remained ever since.

Jacky sold fruit and vegetables from horse and cart around Sunderland before opening his first indoor market in 1925. Despite facing numerous challenges, including fires and bombings during the 2nd world War, the market survived and thrived, becoming a symbol of Sunderland’s identity. It has been a staple in the city’s shopping scene for over 95 years.

Makers Construction won the contract through competitive tender to carry out water proofing to the decks due to water ingress. Water was making its way through the existing asphalt through splits, cracks and upstands which was leaking into the shops and stalls below, Triflex put together a specification following their own testing of the car park.
