Huff and Puff Charity Golf Day

Hawkstone Park in ShropshireNow in its 14th year Makers newest elite golfing force assembled at this year’s venue Hawkstone Park in Shropshire to battle 19 other teams for ultimate glory.

The day followed the usual format of nerves and trying to iron out last minute golf swing issues on the range before even attempting the most welcome coffee and bacon roll in what can only be described as a chilly start to the day, the first sign of autumn on the horizon.

The summer weather has been incredibly dry but recent rain meant the course was in excellent condition, in the past the tournament has been held in October where it has been rather damp but opinions were it was in its best condition for years.

Playing off yellow tees, the 18-hole measures just over 6100 yards with a par of 72 through some picturesque parkland landscape.

Hawkstone Park in ShropshireThe competition required the best 3 points total by each player, out of each team of 4, so a really tough format, meaning every team member had to be on his mettle.

The purpose of the Huff and Puff Charity Day is to raise funds for worthy causes. Last year the event raised £5100 which is split between Macmillan who received £4100 and a request was made for Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice based in Rotherham who received £1,000.

The fund raising comprises of team entry fees and the Charity Raffle after the 3-course dinner at the Hawkstone Park Hotel usually after several drinks when the generosity of those in the room tends to flow.

Hawkstone Park in ShropshireThe Makers team sporting their 50th Year Celebratory Golfing attire had what’s called a mixed day with the 3 best player format severely hampering the outcome. Despite respectable scores by Ollie Smith and Luke Foster our other 2 team players of Caelan Brettell and Simon Hollier are fairly new to the game and first comp nerves took over. The team carded a very respectable 91 for 3 players counting but nowhere near the eventual winners of 109 who collected their trophies to the usual cat calls of “bandits” all of course in good golf club etiquette.

Again, the raffle proved to be successful once again with wine box sets donated by Makers proving firm favourites for the early winners amongst the plethora of golfing accessories.

In the end a good time was had by all especially by the young gentleman who offered to look after everyone’s raffle tickets once the draw was completed raising an incredible £5000 for the Macmillan Cancer Care Unite at Ysbyty Glan Clwyd.

Following the event John Hughes organiser of the event presented the cheque to the staff of the ward caring for cancer patients. Again, Makers were delighted to attend and support the day in raising funds for such a worthy cause.

Here’s to next year and plenty of time to practice!
