Highfurlong Special School
Highfurlong School is a state of the art purpose built school located in the North of Blackpool. Pupils come from Blackpool, Wyre and Flyde and in some cases further afield to access the special education provision that is on offer. Construction commenced on site in April 2014, to create 2 schools. Blackpool Aspire Academy and Highfurlong Special School.
Carillion the main contractor on this project selected a single ply waterproofing layer as the roof finish. Although finished in 2015 the special school wouldn’t sign off the building due to the roof leaking in numerous places. Carillion along with their selected roofing contractor failed to make the roof watertight and these issues carried on for a further 3 years until the collapse of Carillion happened which also took the roofing contractor down with them. The leaks had got so bad that the councils only option was to completely replace the waterproofing layer of the roof.
Within the work planned to run into term time we selected Triflex’s fully reinforced Protect cold applied liquid system, using the existing single ply as the substrate we could simply overlay the failed roof, causing no disruption to the school below.
The metal cappings to the external perimeter were a cause for concern, butted together….
