Makers at the Oval

As part of Makers ongoing 50 Year Celebrations, we were delighted to share the occasion with staff, clients and the odd dignitary.

In what seems to be an ever-warming country Makers took full advantage of the hospitality provided by The Duchy Suite at the Oval.  A very welcomed air-conditioned facility that dealt with the sweltering 31oc.

Travelling up from Devon the night before Jim Maker was very keen to see the third days play, unfortunately England had had another mini batting collapse which meant a day of rear-guard action.  Jim was quite quick to point out a number of buildings around the Oval that Makers had worked on many years ago and as he said, “still standing!!!”.

At the start of play talk was of England achieving 250 but determined batting by Fisher edged the score to 291 exactly 100 runs behind New Zealand.

Wickets were very limited during the 3rd day as New Zealand took control on what was a very hot but placid wicket with England only taking 3 wickets but New Zealand adding to their commanding lead.  The same ran into Saturday and strong bowling by New Zealand’s attack saw Henry pick up 5 wickets and close out England’s five batsman in less than 1 hour to level the series.

New Zealand won by 253 runs levelling the series.

England inspiration captain Ben Stokes was sorely missed but provided debuts for Cox, Rew and Baker.

This is the first time New Zealand have played at the Oval since 1999, who are also the last side to win a test series against England on home soil.

The Oval is a tremendous ground to watch cricket with The Duchy Suite second to none.  Now with a capacity of 27500 providers the perfect backdrop for international cricket.

The Ovals test pedigree goes back as far as 1880 when it hosted the very first test match played in England.

The series moves to another famous ground of Trent Bridge for the final match of the series where England have a chance to pull off a final victory.

“What a wonderful day, I never thought anyone would bother to celebrate Makers Milestone, but I am delighted you have and even more thrilled to be invited.  The company was amazing and I’m overjoyed to receive my jacket although it was bloody hot!!

I am so please, you go from strength to strength, I know it hasn’t been easy, but I ham really proud of the team.  It’s been a wonderful day; it’s taken me back years and one I will treasure for a long time. “

Jim Maker fondest memories.

“It’s been a real pleasure to reward member of the staff clients and colleagues all real cricket fans and especially Jim.  I am delighted he could join us and celebrate with us.  He still looks the same as he did 20 years ago and recounting tales at dinner with G&T’s was absolutely ideal.  To all our guests many many thanks for supporting us on what was an incredibly hot day, and we look forward to doing it all again!!”
