Makers Shoot To The Top

Makers Shoots to the topWrekin Products based in Lichfield held their inaugural Golf tournament at the Branston Golf and Country Club, Burton Upon Trent, Staffordshire. Co-hosted by Grafton Contracting, 9 teams pitted their wits against each other in a Stableford format with 3 scores to count from each 4 ball on every hole. The day before had seen the course closed due to heavy rain but the green staff were able to provide a course to play on all bar the bunkers which were declared GUR which had a profound effect on the scores!!

Makers team led by Steve Warner Branston’s current 2016 Club Captain playing off 8 was supported by Sean Allsop fellow member and Makers HSQE Manager off 14, John Walker Makers Compliance Manager 15, Makers Team Picture Golfand bringing up the rear Simon Lamb, MD hacking around off 9.  Makers securing the last tee spot knew that it was a race against time and the weather.  Already missing out on the England v Wales European qualifier, the team resigned itself to knuckling down to business whilst the rest of the nation would be glued to TV sets far and wide.

Branston was also hosting Ascot ladies day, where televised coverage on large screens drinking and quaffing large volumes of Prosecco is punctuated by the odd race and cheer. Although we could hear cheers around the course it was difficult to discern it form winner or goals.  The team had already agreed not to consult with digital updates so we could watch the game later.

BoardWrekin Products who supply specialist drainage products to the civils industry were excellent host providing a full refreshments and prize table.  Team prizes and spot prizes for nearest the pin and longest drive were also available. Despite teeing of last the Makers team set themselves a target to chase down some strong competition.  At the turn John Walker was displaying some talent way beyond his handicap number obviously the hours of lessons provided by Steve Warner in “the yard” began to pay off with gross birdies and 4 point holes becoming his trademark.  Those in the team with proper handicaps struggled to maintain the momentum but despite trying to throw it all away on the 17th a 10 point haul on the 18th saw Makers team hit first spot!!

Makers took top spot with125 points followed by Alstom 114 points and Costain with 106.  All teams received fantastic prizes with the winners receiving golfing equipment up the value of £150 each but John Walker also managed a nearest the pin on the difficult 180 yard par 3 7th and claimed a new Addidas golf shirt to compliment his other goodies. Flood ShotSteve Warner who is Branstons current Captain of the club welcomed all the teams to the club and paid tribute to both staff and green staff for getting the course in some shape following its closure to flooding.

Branston has the unique patio setting where large gatherings occur to watch the players completing the 18th hole applying additional pressure to what is already a difficult hole. Following the conclusion of the competition and prize giving the Ascot ladies took to the green to demonstrate their putting skills to the visiting teams with varying success.  We believe Prosecco was the secret ingredient!!

“On behalf of Makers I would like to extend my appreciation to Wrekin Products, Mr. Peter Fisher of Costain for inviting Makers to enter a team and for the guys for carrying me on the course, I can’t remember the last time I won anything!! Well done!”

Simon Lamb, MD
