Located centrally DC Grocery supplies all of the Midland Supermarkets from Daventry. The site operates 24/7 and has 3 shift changes operating with 2000 staff per shift change.
The car park has a high demand and the top deck was made available to Makers for the completion of the project with the exception of the high security entrance to the skywalk and the provision for smokers on the top deck throughout the whole of the contract.
The car park falls outside the DC security area but is completely land locked with main roads and a 4 lane heavy goods vehicle entrance on the other side.
The car parks issue was that since it’s construction in 2008 the top deck waterproofing which has a Sterling Lloyd system failed to take into consideration the deflection above the steel beam lines and cracked promptly allowing water to penetrate through the structural topping and causing sever corrosion to the structural steel members below.
In order to prevent replacement of the steel beams the system was to be replaced. Water tracking beneath the system had caused large scale debonding leaving the exposed concrete surface open to the elements.
The car park experienced over 3000 cars movements per day as a result of the 3 working shifts.
The existing waterproofing was removed to reveal significant cracking along every beam line which had the potential to drip on vehicles below. A daily sequencing created exclusion zone below to ensure the priming application could take place and move along the car park until completed. 750m2 was cordoned off to ensure no damage to vehicles took place.
The site has over 15 different languages on so directional signage had to be clear and universally understood with clear access routes to the security gates and smoking shelters.
The 6000m2 project received Triflex 276 concrete primer and banding across all main structural beams, each concrete construction day joint and any other cracking that had occurred. It then received Triflex’s DeckFloor system.
The client choose to us RAL 7043 dark grey in the drive isles RAL7040 mid grey for parking bays and the RAL5017 blue dedicated walkways. Choosing to use demarcation for the disabled and electrical charging bay provision.
Due to the amount of traffic using the double ramp we decided to upgrade the central ramp and top hammerhead with Triflex’s ProPark system and further upgrade using Emery 1-3mm aggregate. Traditionally this would receive a clear coat application but they preferred a through colour application using the same dark grey colour 7043.
Tesco employees were segregated from the work areas giving them a dedicated entrance using Herras fencing double weighted and Herras advertising deisgned by Makers to improve their experience.
The project was completed in 16 weeks during the summer months and Tesco are delighted with the outcome.
